'London in the reign of Queen Elizabeth' after Agas' 1560 map. DOWER c1880

'London in the Reign of Queen Elizabeth' A reduced version of one of the earliest plans of London, attributed to Ralph Agas, although it is unlikely that he actually produced the original map. The buildings are shown in profile. The birds eye view of the city from the south spans Westminster Abbey & Hall on the extreme left through to the Tower of London on the right. St Paul's Cathedral is shown centrally, (without the spire that was destroyed by lightning in 1561). The old London Bridge, complete with buildings on it, is shown. The city walls are visible running around the square mile from the Fleet River in the west to the Tower in the east. The bull and bear baiting rings can be seen on Bankside.
