Piece by Piece: The Power of Personal Essay | 3-Week Online Writing Workshop
In Latin, the word 'essay' originally meant to test, examine, or try out. To write an essay is an act of attempt; of experimentation. In Piece by Piece: The Power of Personal Essay, writers will explore and understand a happening, occurrence, or event (personal or public) with words and through different literary devices, namely metaphor and perspective. Taught by Mia Brabham Nolan, staff writer at Shondaland and author of Note to Self, whose work has been published in Cosmopolitan, Huffington Post, Thought Catalog, and other publications. In each class, students will discuss an excerpt from an essay that exemplifies the device being used, then complete a writing exercise to build upon the piece of writing they begin in the first class. By the end of the course, writers and the subject they are exploring will be both transformed and transformative by their own findings and truth. You will begin your essay in week one and workshop it in week three. Open to beginner and intermediate writers. 3 class sessions Mondays, November 2-16 7p-9p ET 4p-6p PT 6p-8p CT Seats are capped to keep this workshop intimate. Registration closes on Saturday, October 31st, 48 hours before our first session, so Mia can prepare for exactly who is in the room. All class meetings will be held via Zoom.
