PERE TAPAWHĀ - a carved arrowhead pendant made from superlative New Zealand pounamu. PERE TAPAWHĀ - Arrowhead. Hand carved for us by Andrew Doughty. A description of this piece in the artists words... This taonga has been named Pere Tapawhā which translates arrowhead shape. It is a combination of two types of pounamu. The base design is the shape of a contemporary Hei Toki (adze). The stone is from the Arahura river located near Hokitika on New Zealand's West Coast. In general, the Hei Toki is a symbol of strength, courage, power, and authority. Traditionally they had two uses. They were functional tools used for cutting down trees and used by Tohunga Whakairo (Master Carvers) to create their elaborate carvings. Secondly, they were bound to ornate wooden handles and used for ceremonial purposes. Only strong chiefs with a lot of mana could wield the toki poutangata (ceremonial axe). Due to this connection with Māori Chiefs they are a symbol of great Mana. Upon this base is inlayed some Douglas Creek pounamu in the shape reminiscent of an arrowhead. This represents direction, overcoming struggle, and moving forward. At another level it also symbolises nourishment through the ability to hunt. This is a medium sized pendant, intricately carved and beautiful to wear. PERE TAPAWHĀ is a marvellous piece, carved from unique New Zealand pounamu. A pendant that punches above its weight!
