What edge lighting is good at — and what it is not The LEDs are built around the mirror edge, so the light reads as a clean illuminated outline instead of a hard rectangular panel. It is softer than direct front lighting and works especially well in bathrooms that already have overhead or sconce lighting. It is not the strongest choice if this is the only light in the room. Output is lower than a frontlit mirror of the same size, and applying makeup by edge light alone may feel dim. If the mirror has to light the room, look at RIGEL or ALTAIR instead. Use 24-inch over a 30-inch vanity, 32-inch over a 36 to 42-inch vanity, and 36-inch over a 42 to 48-inch vanity. Aim for 6 to 12 inches of wall on each side whenever the room allows it. CRI 90+ is the number everyone quotes. R9 is the one that matters. R9 measures deep red rendering — the wavelength your complexion, your lips and your blush actually live in. A light can score 90 on CRI and still render R9 near zero, which is why some bathroom mirrors make everyone look washed out. These run R9 above 50.
