About Certified Organic This product is certified Japan Agricultural Standard Organic (JAS). Japan has one of the world's strictest organic certification standards. But what does certified organic mean when it comes to fruits and vegetables? ✔ Free of harmful synthetic chemical inputs such as fertilizer, pesticides or any food additives. ✔ Free of genetically modified seeds (non-GMO) ✔ The farmland and soil in use are free of any chemical treatments. ✔ Organic produce is heavily regulated. Producers and importers are checked and inspected by governmental bodies or certified third parties. Organic certification requires detailed bookkeeping and documentation for 100% traceability. "Certified organic" is a protected phrase and the use is legally restricted. ✔ Organic farming is more sustainable when it comes to holistic food production. The lack of harmful pesticides is better for the environment. ✔ Organic produce comes mostly from family-owned farms that own smaller acres of organic land. It is also important to mention that organic produce is more cost-intensive. Organic farming has lower yields compared to conventional farming and is oftentimes more labor-intensive as well. Additionally, organic certification and audits require annual fees for producers resulting in higher prices for the end consumers. About Ito Farm Organic Strawberries Ito Farm is a family-run farm located in Yamaga City, a hilly and mountainous area of Kumamoto Prefecture. The farm was founded by a producer whose experience working in international cooperation inspired a deeper interest in agriculture. Driven by the desire to bring delicious and safe food to as many people as possible, the farm is passionately dedicated to carefully cultivating strawberries. Strawberries are highly susceptible to pests and diseases, making them particularly challenging to grow organically. At Ito Farm, these sensitive fruits are cultivated without relying on chemical pesticides or fertilizers. Instead, the farm uses organic fertilizers along with mineral-rich seaweed, nigari (bittern), and microorganisms such as lactic acid bacteria that help ferment and improve the soil. Beneficial insects and microorganisms are also used to help control pests and diseases. Through extensive trial and error, Ito Farm has developed healthy, vibrant soil resembling the ecosystem of a natural forest. As a result, the strawberries grown are not only cultivated with safety in mind, but also to bring out the best of strawberry's natural flavor.
