The Japanese dress watch reduced to five and a half millimetres This Seiko watch, reference 7431-5210, can be worn equally well by a man or a woman, with a 27.6mm gold-plated case in the shape of a tonneau — a rectangle with slightly curved sides and cut lower corners. Its 5.5mm thickness places it among the finest dress watches of its generation: it slips under a cuff without the slightest resistance. The champagne dial features a fine vertical satin finish, which shifts the tone from pale gold to bronze depending on the angle of the wrist. Twelve applied baton indices, tapered and polished, are set directly against this background, with no numerals or railway track other than a discreet dotted minute track around the edge. The golden baton hands exactly echo the design of the indices, and a very fine central seconds hand completes the whole. The signature is limited to SEIKO QUARTZ below XII. No collection name, no calibre mention, no ornament: it is a pared-back catalogue model, whose interest lies entirely in the accuracy of its proportions and the quality of the dial finish. The 7431 calibre powering it is an analogue quartz movement with central seconds, whose production began in 1982. Its particularly slim architecture is what made it possible to house the movement in a case of this thickness — this was the development focus claimed by Seiko for its dress lines of the period, at a time when the brand was seeking to compete with ultra-thin Swiss watches on their own ground. Three points to note 5.5mm thickness — a profile that few dress watches achieve, including among contemporary Swiss productions. Champagne satin-finished dial — the vertical satin finish shifts the tone from pale gold to bronze depending on the direction of the light. Case tonneau gold-plated — curved sides and cut lower corners, a characteristic design of the Japanese dress watch of the 1980s. Why choose a vintage Seiko watch? Buying a vintage Seiko watch rather than a new model means gaining access to a leading Japanese manufacture at a reasonable budget, through pieces whose construction has proven its durability. Vintage quartz watches from this period are also the easiest to maintain on the pre-owned market: a battery change is enough to get them running again. This reference occupies a precise place among vintage men's and women's watches: its 27.6mm format and extreme slimness make it a vintage dress watch that can be worn equally by both, in a strictly formal register. It is the type kind of piece one wears under a shirt rather than in full view. Like all our pre-owned Seiko watches, this one has been opened and checked by our watchmakers: verification of the calibre and its consistency with the reference, examination of the dial, hands, and case. Every vintage Japanese watch we offer comes with a Atelier Victor invoice serving as a certificate, a one-year guarantee, and authenticity guaranteed for life. → Discover our vintage Seiko watches → View our selection of vintage Japanese watches Technical specifications Brand: Seiko Model: Classic dress watch (without line designation) Reference: 7431-5210 Estimated year: 1984 Origin: Japan Gender: Men's and women's watch (Unisex) Movement: Japanese quartz, Seiko 7431 caliber Functions: Hours, minutes, seconds Case: Gold-plated, tonneau shape with clipped corners (steel caseback) Dimensions: 27.6mm (28.5mm including the crown) Lug to lug: 36mm Thickness: 5.5mm Lug width: 19mm Crown: Gold-plated, fluted, original Dial: Champagne with vertical satin finish, applied baton hour markers, original Hands: Golden, baton-shaped, original Crystal: Mineral (condition 6/10) Strap: Brown lizard-grain leather, handmade, not original Buckle: Steel pin buckle, not original Condition and warranty Overall condition: Fair state of preservation for a forty-year-old piece. It is rare, including among contemporary Swiss dress watches, which generally exceed 7mm. This slimness changes the way the watch wears: it slips under any cuff without resistance and never makes itself felt on the wrist. This was one of the development priorities claimed by Seiko for its dress lines from this period. What should be known about wear to the gold plating? Plating is a layer of gold deposited on a base metal, which thins over the decades in the areas most exposed to friction — corners, edges, flanks. On this piece, this wear is visible and we photographed it without retouching. Replating is technically possible with a specialist, but it erases the original traces of the case; some collectors advise against it for that reason. Can the Crystal be replaced? Yes. A mineral Crystal of this type can be replaced without difficulty by a watchmaker, at modest cost. We chose to leave the original Crystal in place and to note its condition as is rather than anticipate a preference that is yours to make. You may keep it as it is or have it changed depending on the use you intend for it. Is a vintage Seiko watch a safe purchase? It is, provided that authenticity is established and the condition is described without reservation. Our watchmakers systematically open the case to verify the calibre and its consistency with the reference, and inspect the dial, hands, and all components. Every pre-owned Seiko watch sold by Atelier Victor comes with an invoice serving as a certificate of authenticity, a one-year warranty, and authenticity guaranteed for life. Is this piece suitable for a slim or larger wrist? With a width of 27.6mm, a Lug-to-lug of 36mm, and a thickness of 5.5mm, it suits wrists measuring approximately 15 to 18cm. Its compact format places it firmly in the dress watch category, wearable equally by a man or a woman. The Lug width measures 19mm, making it easy to change the strap.
