THE PRACTICAL FAMILY HERBALIST Herbs for Home, Health & Happy Families An eight-week, hands-on online herbalism class for beginners who want to understand teas, traditions, and responsible everyday family care. JOIN THE FIRST-ACCESS WAITLIST You do not need to know every plant in the forest. You need to know how to meet a few herbs well, how to prepare them, when they may offer support, when they are wrong for a particular person, and when the situation requires more than a cup of tea. The Practical Family Herbalist is a beginner-friendly herbalism class designed to help you build usable knowledge, not collect jars of beautiful mystery leaves you are afraid to touch. Over eight weeks, you will learn how to prepare herbal teas, understand a focused collection of household herbs, create simple formulas, assess everyday situations responsibly, and begin building a thoughtful family apothecary. And yes, we will make room for folklore and plant magic. Join the waitlist to receive first access to enrollment, founding-cohort details, class dates, tuition, and herb-box information. WHAT MAKES THIS HERBALISM CLASS DIFFERENT? A list of herbs is not the same thing as knowing what to do with them. You can memorize that chamomile is “for sleep” and still not know: Whether it is appropriate for this particular person How much herb or water to use How long to steep it Whether an allergy or medication changes the decision What improvement should look like When to stop experimenting and seek professional care That is why this class is built around one central principle: ASSESS BEFORE YOU ADDRESS. Before you reach for an herb, PAUSE. THE PAUSE FRAMEWORK P — Person Who needs support? Consider age, health history, allergies, medications, pregnancy or breastfeeding, individual sensitivities, and the person’s ability to communicate what they are experiencing. A — Assess What exactly is happening? Notice the symptoms, severity, onset, duration, patterns, possible triggers, and anything that makes the experience better or worse. U — Understand What might be needed right now, hydration, nourishment, rest, comfort, nervous-system support, gentle herbal care, monitoring, or professional medical attention? S — Select Choose the gentlest appropriate response for this particular person and situation. Sometimes that includes an herb. Sometimes the responsible choice is not using an herb at all. E — Evaluate Observe what happens next. Did the person improve, remain the same, worsen, or develop a new symptom? Know when to reassess, stop, or seek professional care. Responsible home herbalism begins with observation, not assumption. WHAT YOU WILL LEARN WEEK ONE: HERBS & TEAS 101 Learn the language of herbalism and compare teas, infusions, decoctions, tinctures, syrups, oils, capsules, and poultices. Practice measuring, steeping, tasting, storing, and documenting herbs properly. WEEK TWO: ASSESS BEFORE YOU ADDRESS Learn the full PAUSE framework, practice realistic family scenarios, identify the boundaries of home support, and develop a plan for evaluating what happens next. WEEK THREE: NERVINES, STRESS & SLEEP Meet relaxing, uplifting, and nourishing nervines. Learn how to distinguish stress, overstimulation, tension, and exhaustion before creating daytime and evening tea formulas. WEEK FOUR: ADAPTOGENS, ENERGY & RESILIENCE Learn what adaptogens actually are, how they differ from stimulants, why they are not appropriate for everyone, and how to move beyond the magical anti-stress claims floating around the internet. WEEK FIVE: COLD, FLU & SEASONAL COMFORT Explore responsible comfort measures for cold and flu season, including teas, hydration, herbal honey, soothing preparations, and the warning signs that require professional evaluation. WEEK SIX: LITTLE BELLIES & FAMILY DIGESTION Compare gas, nausea, tension, irritation, constipation, and diarrhea as different experiences. Learn how to select gentle digestive support without treating every belly ache as the same little beast. WEEK SEVEN: WOMEN’S WELLNESS & CYCLICAL SUPPORT Explore nourishing and comfort-focused herbs for menstruation, mood, sleep, energy, and cyclical care, while learning which symptoms should never be dismissed as “just part of being a woman.” WEEK EIGHT: FOLKLORE, MAGIC & THE FAMILY APOTHECARY Explore the stories, traditions, ethics, and magical associations surrounding plants. Then formulate and name your own family tea and build an intentional home apothecary. WHAT THIS CLASS IS NOT This class does not train students to diagnose or treat illness. It does not replace medical care, pediatric guidance, pharmacist support, emergency evaluation, or individualized clinical herbalism. It does not confer licensure or professional herbalist certification. It teaches practical foundations, thoughtful observation, responsible home support, and the ability to recognize when a situation requires more. MEET YOUR INSTRUCTOR Kat Scott is the co-founder of Emerald Coast Alternatives, a family-owned herbal tea company that has served thousands of customers through approachable, functional tea blends and herbal education. She completed Herbal Medicine for Professionals through Herbal Medics Academy and brings experience as a former EMT, health coach, group fitness instructor, mindfulness teacher, positive psychology practitioner, business owner, and mother of four. Kat’s teaching style blends practical education, nervous-system awareness, curiosity, storytelling, folklore, and the radical idea that we should understand what we are doing before throwing elderberry at everyone who sneezes. Her central teaching philosophy is simple: Relief is not random. It is a ritual, but responsible rituals begin with understanding.
