Lampeira Branca (also known as Lampa Branca) is a highly productive and prized Portuguese fig variety native to the Algarve region, renowned for its light green to greenish-yellow skin and rich honey flavor. The interior flesh ranges from light amber to deep translucent red, featuring a remarkably juicy, syrupy texture with a smooth melt and a very slight seed crunch. This exceptional biferous variety is highly regarded for fresh eating, drying beautifully for winter storage, and reliably producing two generous crops a year without requiring wasp pollination. Latin Name: Ficus carica Site and Soil: Figs thrive in 1/2 day to full sun and well-drained soil. Pollination Requirements: Lampeira Branca is a common-type, self-fertile fig (does not require caprification). Bearing Age: 1-2 years after planting. Size at Maturity: 10-15 ft in height, easily kept smaller with pruning. Bloom Time: Flowers are not noticeable as they are inside the fruit. Ripening Time: Produces an early summer breba crop followed by a heavy main crop in late August through September. Yield: 20-30 lbs. or more per plant on a mature tree.
