These are ammonite fossils! They lived from the Devonian to the early Paleolithic ages. However this family of cephalopods (the family of squids and octopuses) were obliterated during the late Jurassic age in the extinction event that also took out the dinosaurs. These are small (2”-5”) but some ammonites could grow up to be true sea monsters, with shells that were 9ft in diameter. In Medieval England, ammonite fossils were called “snakestones” and thought to be coiled snakes that had turned to stone. A 7th century legend states that St. Hilda of Whitby turned an infestation of snakes to stone.
