Three Cotton Characters ・ Rapier-Loom Weaving ・ Imabari, Japan 01 Three cottons, three characters — each worth experiencing in everyday life. 02 Sixty years of towel-making craftsmanship from Imabari, Japan's foremost towel town. 03 A gift that quietly returns the favor every time it's picked up. A Gift Worth Reaching For, Every Single Day Giving a towel as a gift looks simple at first glance — and yet it's one of the most considered choices you can make. A towel is something the recipient picks up every day, something that touches their skin, something they'll notice each time it does. That's precisely why this kind of gift calls for something genuinely good. Watanabe Pile has spent more than sixty years in Imabari, Ehime Prefecture — Japan's foremost towel-making region — studying cotton from around the world and drawing out the individual character of each variety. The result is a range of towels that mass production could never replicate: each one different, each one worth keeping. We've selected three gift sets from their lineup — one for each distinct cotton character — so the recipient can discover what that difference actually feels like in their hands. Each set arrives with a tag describing the cotton's origin and character. A small detail — but one that gives the gift a little more to say. Each set ships wrapped in tissue paper, ready to give The Gift Sets Set A ・ Samarkand Cotton ・ 2 Face Towels Samarkand Cotton — Beige and Greige Samarkand — Firm, Reliable, and Enduringly Good Samarkand is one of the great cities of Central Asia — an ancient crossroads on the Silk Road, set deep in the heart of Uzbekistan. The cotton grown in this region has long been known for its quality, and it is from here that Watanabe Pile sources the Samarkandaria cotton behind this set. Among all the towels in the lineup, this is the one adopted by multiple hotels — a long-selling flagship that has stayed in the range precisely because it keeps performing. From the cotton of Uzbekistan, Watanabe Pile selects only the long, full fibers at the heart of each boll — the finest part — and spins them with a careful twist. The result is a towel that feels soft without being fragile: a firm, substantial hand that brings a sense of reassurance with every use. Dense in its weave, it holds its fullness wash after wash, and its absorbency is exceptional. Reliable in the kitchen, at the sink, or anywhere a dependable everyday towel belongs. Set B ・ San Joaquin Cotton ・ Bath Towel + Face Towel San Joaquin Cotton — Bath Towel in Pink, Face Towel in Off-White San Joaquin — Light, Fluffy, and Endlessly Soft San Joaquin cotton comes from California's fertile San Joaquin Valley, where the long, pure-white fibers grow in ideal conditions. Watanabe Pile spins the yarn with almost no twist, preserving the cotton's natural fluffiness and soft character as completely as possible. Pile is applied across the entire surface — edge to edge — so every part of the towel wraps with the same light, enveloping softness. With a shedding rate of just 0.065%, it's gentle enough for a newborn's skin, and the whole family can reach for it without a second thought. Set C ・ Bangalore Organic Cotton ・ 2 Bath Towels Bangalore Organic Cotton — Off-White and Kinari (natural unbleached) Bangalore Organic — Silky, Refined, and Better With Every Wash The moment it meets the skin, it glides — a silkiness that's rare even among premium towels. This is the towel that made the team at By Emotion pause: "I've never felt a towel quite like this." The cotton is Taj Mahal Organic — a long-staple variety grown by organic farming near Bangalore, in the fertile lands of India. Watanabe Pile combines three threads in a carefully calibrated balance, building a fabric that is dense without being stiff, and silky in a way that's genuinely surprising. With every wash, the cotton's natural resilience and fullness come more alive — not fading with use, but deepening. More than one member of the team now counts this as their personal favorite, reaching for it day after day. Highly absorbent and low-shedding, it works equally well for a newborn or as a quietly luxurious everyday companion. Passion Passed Down, Woven From Cotton Sourced Around the World Ehime Prefecture's Imabari is known across Japan as the country's foremost towel-making region — the name "Imabari Towel" carries a level of trust few textile names can claim. Founded in 1963, Watanabe Pile has spent more than sixty years in this town, carrying forward the passionate craftsmanship of its founding generation in pursuit of "a towel the world has never seen." What sets Watanabe Pile apart is an intimate knowledge of cotton grown around the world, and a commitment to drawing out the individual character of each variety. By closely studying the fiber properties of each cotton and developing its own approach to twisting and weaving, the mill produces a range of towels that mass production could never replicate. Studying twist and weave to bring out each cotton's character Most mills source their cotton through a single trading company, but Watanabe Pile works with several, so each towel can draw on the particular qualities of cotton from different countries. The family also visits cotton fields and spinning mills in person, seeing for themselves the faces and conditions behind each harvest. Handing a finished towel back to the people who grew the cotton, they say, is part of the craft itself. Toshio Watanabe, who led the mill before the current generation, was a self-declared "towel maniac" — every business trip abroad meant returning with a suitcase full of towels to study. Today, his wife Chitose, his elder daughter Arisa, and his son Fumio carry that spirit forward, working closely with the rest of the team to weave towels made to move the hearts of everyone who touches them. Arisa (left), Chitose (center), and Fumio (right) Made to Feel Its Best After You've Used It Every towel in this range is woven on a rapier loom — a mid-speed machine, gentler in motion than the high-speed looms more commonly used in Imabari. That slower pace puts less strain on delicate yarn, and the extra time spent weaving produces a fuller, more even texture with real depth. Towel-making also involves more than ten separate steps, from preparing the yarn to the final finish. In Imabari, most of these steps are handled by different specialists, each stage carrying the hand-work of a skilled craftsperson. Woven slowly and carefully for an even, considered texture Amid all this painstaking work, what matters most to Watanabe Pile is a simple wish: that a towel should reach its best condition after it enters daily life, not before. A towel is an everyday object, found in every home — which is exactly why the more it's used, the more its comfort deepens and its softness grows. These are towels whose true completion waits somewhere further down the road of daily use. Comfort that deepens the more it's used Specifications Brand: Watanabe Pile Made in: Imabari, Ehime Prefecture, Japan Set A — Samarkand Cotton Face Towel Set 2 face towels (Beige + Greige) ・ 13.4 × 33.5 in (340 × 850 mm) ・ 100% cotton (Samarkandaria) Set B — San Joaquin Cotton Mixed Set 1 bath towel (Pink) + 1 face towel (Off-White) ・ Bath: 23.6 × 47.2 in (600 × 1200 mm) ・ Face: 13.4 × 33.5 in (340 × 850 mm) ・ 100% cotton (San Joaquin cotton) Set C — Bangalore Organic Cotton Bath Towel Set 2 bath towels (Off-White + Kinari) ・ 23.6 × 47.2 in (600 × 1200 mm) ・ 100% cotton (Taj Mahal organic long-staple cotton) Shipping Ships within 3 business days ・ Shipping cost included in price Each set ships wrapped in tissue paper, ready to give.
