The Fleets drawn up for Battle – A Royal Collaboration Discover “The Fleets drawn up for Battle”, part of an exclusive collaboration between Kunstsokken and the National Maritime Museum in Amsterdam. This design is inspired by Willem van de Velde the Elder's monumental tapestry from 1685 – woven according to his own sketches made during the Battle of Solebay in 1672. Van de Velde was no ordinary artist, but a true “war correspondent” who captured the naval battle as it unfolded from a Dutch ship. His sketches were later transformed into designs for impressive tapestries, commissioned by King Charles II himself. In 2020, the National Maritime Museum acquired these rare, royally commissioned tapestries – the largest purchase in their history. Now we are bringing these 350-year-old maritime masterpieces to life on your socks, complete with historic fleets, red flags and the characteristic rolling seas. Wear a piece of Dutch seafaring history – from royal commission to everyday sock drawer.
