This is a brand new authentic Khal Muhammadi rug, handmade in Afghanistan. Unlike most handmade rugs, these rugs are not named after their city of production, rather they are named after a skilled rug producer and dyer from Kunduz, northern Afghanistan, during the late 20th century. He formulated a unique tone of deep red from madder root which differed to the dep red of Aqcha rugs, having a slight copper tone. Finding Khal Muhammadi rugs with this original dye is extremely rare, as most rugs have the standard deep red dye. Khal Muhammadi rugs take some inspiration from other rug designs, for example the border geometric design of Aqcha rugs, and octagonal motifs from Ersari rugs. However, over time these rugs have acquired a characteristic design of their own, with fine detailed floral patterns, although different variations can also be found. These rugs use the symmetrical Turkish (Ghiordes) knot and have a glossy lustre due to the fine wool used and dense pile. They have a medium-high knot count and are regarded as fine quality rugs. It is a cultural practice for families in Afghanistan to place Khal Muhammadi rugs in their guest room as they are provide a warm welcome with the deep red, while the intricate floral motifs makes it stand out without being too distracting or busy.
