Antique Tribal Caucasian Runner with Stacked Diamond Medallions, Abrash Field, 3’4 x 15’9 Runner #3939
This runner is a full-on tribal document. Fourteen feet and change of stacked tribal diamond medallions woven by hand in the Caucasus Mountains near the Black and Caspian Seas, dating to circa 1880. These weavers were not simply making decorative objects. They were weaving protection, memory, symbolism, and tradition into wool…visual language passed through generations and preserved knot by knot. A woven cartouche visible at one end appears to carry the maker’s mark worked directly into the design itself. And this old tribal runner has lived. Scattered wear moves across the field. Areas of lower pile soften sections of the diamonds into texture. Please study the detailed photos carefully to appreciate the character, condition, and the way this runner has traveled through nearly a century and a half of life. The ground shifts beautifully, too. Near black gives way to deep brown…then aubergine…changing with the direction of the wool and the natural variation in historic dye work. Some people ask if tonal shifts are damage. They are not. They are one of the fingerprints of handmade textiles. Real wool. Real dye vats. Real people making something slowly by hand where no two moments of production behaved the same. An ivory ground anchors madder red, soft sky blue, teal, earthy brown black, and those impossible vegetable dyed tones that old wool carries so beautifully. The palette tells its own story. Brick rose reds. Cornflower blue. Warm ivory. Deep iron tones. Natural dyes drawn from plant material, minerals, insects, and age itself…still reading beautifully over a century later. A tribal runner with tremendous age, movement, symbolism, and soul underfoot. _____________________________________________________________________ The Rug Rundown… the wool…the weave…the wear Size: 3'4 x 15'9 Material: Vegetable Dyed Wool Construction: Hand knotted Origin: Caucasus Mountains region Age: Circa 1880 Design: Tribal diamond medallion runner Condition: Low pile and scattered wear consistent with age.
