Mission Santa Cruz medal with St Junipero Serra on the front. Mission Santa Cruz is twelfth in the mission chain and was founded on August 28, 1791 by Farther Lasuén, it is a tiny mission along the northern California coast. Unlike the rest of California’s missions, leaders did not name Santa Cruz after a saint, rather after the holy cross. The original mission was destroyed, but a smaller replica chapel was built in the 1930s near the original site. St. Junípero Serra (1713–1784) was a Franciscan friar who founded the first nine of 21 Spanish missions in Alta California to spread Catholicism and establish Spanish presence. While Serra initiated the mission system, Mission Santa Cruz (the 12th mission) was founded in 1791 by Father Fermín Francisco de Lasuén, Serra's successor, seven years after Serra's death. Quantity: Sold in increments of one piece. Size: 1" long x 5/8" wide (25.4mm x 15.87mm) Material: Zamac base with oxidized silver plate. Made in Italy. There are 21 Spanish missions in California, established between 1769 and 1823, stretching from San Diego to Sonoma along the 600-mile El Camino Real. Founded to expand Spanish territory, they served as religious, economic, and social centers. Today, they are popular historic landmarks, many acting as museums, with Mission San Diego de Alcalá as the oldest and San Luis Rey de Francia often considered the largest.
