CARPENTRY INTEREST. Scottish Arts and Crafts Furniture Design Publication: “The Chip Carver” 1897 by George S. Gibson, Edinburgh.
CARPENTRY INTEREST. This is a very rare publication on Scottish Arts and Crafts Furniture Design. It is entitled “The Chip Carver” by George S. Gibson, Edinburgh. George S. Gibson (1867 - 1942) was a master woodworks and sculptor who was born in Edinburgh. After an apprenticeship in Scotland, he emigrated to Canada in 1910 and became renowned for high-end architectural carving, including works displayed on the British Columbia Parliament Buildings. It was published in 1897. It has eight fold-out patterns printed in green ink. This is a very rare 19th century publication which was issued as a guide for woodworkers, carvers and furniture makers. It has a brief text which explains the principles of drawing and executing various designs, followed by eight fold-out sheets, each measuring approx 18 x 2 inches. The designs are patterns for use on the following items: music holders; fireside stools, photo holders, cigarette boxes, trinket boxes etc. The patterns are pristine and unused with all illustrations and leaves intact. Altogether it contains a total of 55 illustrations (one of the original illustrations is missing - having in the long past been cut out as a pattern for a woodworking project; as photographed in my last image). The volume measures 30 x 23.5 cm. Price takes into account both the rarity of this volume and its condition. It will be sent to you with Royal Mail (Small Parcel) Tracked. This will be applied to your order at the checkout.
