Ajuga reptans 'XXL'

XXL Ajuga. Plant Delights identified this giant sport form of 'Black Scallop' Ajuga (which had occurred at Juniper Level Botanical Garden in 2017) as a vigorous form of its parent, producing lush growth and a carpet of blue 6" spikes of flowers in early spring. The rich burgundy foliage will make an almost impenetrable carpet of cover for light shade or filtered sun locations. For the best appearance, give it uniform moisture, but it doesn't like "wet feet", otherwise one might experience some damping off. There is hardly a more carefree groundcover for shade to part sun than this plant. We have not even had deer or rabbits eating it, which makes it a winner in my book right away. It makes for a lush groundcover and even holds in deep burgundy foliage color in shade. It divides quickly, so one will not have to wait very long to get a good dense cover. It is a sterile selection, so one doesn't have to worry about seedlings coming up in unwanted places. Zones 7-10
