A Brief History of the Southern N Class Designed by the legendary Richard Maunsell for the South Eastern and Chatham Railway (SECR) and later built in large numbers by the Southern Railway, the N Class 2-6-0 "Mogul" entered service in 1917. Engineered to replace aging 0-6-0 goods engines, the N Class was a masterpiece of standardization and rugged utility. It featured a highly efficient superheated boiler and a modern top-feed design that made it incredibly cheap to maintain and easy to operate.
