About the Dalmore Distillery The Dalmore Distillery - Highland Luxury Beneath the Royal Stag The Dalmore Distillery, a proud and integral part of the Highland whisky scene since 1839, is located in the small town of Alness, overlooking the waters of the Cromarty Firth. The distillery was built with funds procured from the illegal opium trade, transferring Alexander Matheson’s fortunes from one ‘sin’ industry to another. After Matheson’s ownership, Clan Mackenzie controlled the distillery for nearly a century. It was during their tenure that The Dalmore procured its iconic logo, the royal 12-pronged stag. Legend has it that during a hunting trip, a member of the Mackenzie clan saved King Alexander III from a charging deer. As a gesture of gratitude, the clan was granted permission to use the royal stag emblem on their coat of arms. The Dalmore still proudly bears this symbol today, making it one of the most recognizable icons in Scotch whisky. As the distillery expanded over time, so too did its footprint and production capacity. Today, The Dalmore operates two stillhouses with stills of three varying sizes. Interestingly, two of the four wash stills feature flattened tops, reportedly cut down to fit inside the building. This unique configuration places the lyne arm on the side of the still, a design that contributes to Dalmore’s signature rich and weighty spirit character. A visit to The Dalmore is not complete without stepping inside its storied dunnage warehouses, rumored to house some of the oldest whisky stocks in Scotland. The atmosphere alone feels steeped in whisky history. Ever popular, The Dalmore is now part of the Whyte & MacKay portfolio and is recognized globally as a symbol of quality and luxury Scotch whisky. While independent bottlings of Dalmore are rare, they are often highly sought after by enthusiasts eager to experience a different side of this celebrated Highland malt.
