Platinum M7 Blizzard Microphone
The "M7 Blizzard" is a hand-built large-diaphragm condenser mic with an M7 capsule and transformer-coupled FET circuit, built into an MXL 990 Blizzard housing. The only remaining piece of the original mic's signal path is the XLR connector. The mic's frequency response is essentially flat, with minimal proximity effect. The mic's high-frequency response is unfiltered, resulting in a very smooth top end roll-off. The circuit is a single-stage JFET/transformer topology with numerous component upgrades. All electrolytic capacitors are our bespoke Black Gate style parts. The JFET is from Linear Systems, selected for low noise and manually biased to maximize SPL ceiling. The output capacitor is a very nice axial polypropylene type. The output transformer is our own custom-wound 6.5:1 design, used in the T-12, T-47, and T-67 microphones. We retained the donor mic's LED feature; when phantom power is applied, four blue LEDs around the base of the capsule light up. (See photo.) The M7 capsule is based on the old Neumann/Gefell design. This is not a K47, K67, or CK-12 type, but another design entirely. We love this capsule for voices and voiceover, acoustic guitar and strings. The mic ships in the original MXL 990 Blizzard packaging, with a swivel mount / stand adaptor. (As of 2026-06-10, the pictured shockmount is no longer available.)
