This mid 16thC chain flail is based on a piece in the Herman Historica Catalogue and is likely of German manufacture. The most notable thing about this piece is the use of what we would commonly call these days a bike chain, making this chain flail different to most other kinds in that it is directional. The use of this chain type in industrial applications goes back to at least the 14thC as you can see extensive diagrams for them in the works of Mariano Taccola. These fully-dimensioned plans show you everything you need to know to make your own flail. This digital download includes an 8-page engineering drawing, including dimensions and materials for every part. The download also includes a full description of Tod’s “Maker’s Notes” for this item, which is chock full of the additional instructions, tips, tricks and techniques that you may need to make this mace. You will need access to a drill press, angle grinder, vice, metal lathe, and preferably a belt linisher. Prior experience of metalworking will be helpful. Tod made and featured this flail in a YouTube film with Matt Easton, where you can see it being used and discuss the features of its unique design.
