Why Nitrate-Selective Resin Matters Many "nitrate filters" sold online use generic type 1 or type 2 anion exchange resin, or even repurposed water softener setups. Those resins prefer sulfate over nitrate, and that creates a dangerous failure mode: once the resin loads up with sulfate, it can dump previously captured nitrate back into your water at concentrations higher than what's coming out of the well. SIR-100-HP is engineered with a different functional group that prefers nitrate: there is no nitrate dumping, even past the sulfate break. Hardness in particular must be removed upstream, both to protect the resin and because the brine makeup water should be softened or low-hardness to avoid calcium carbonate scaling.
