Whole House Nitrate Filter System (10 GPM) This whole-house nitrate filter system removes nitrate and nitrite at every tap in the house using ResinTech SIR-100-HP nitrate-selective ion exchange resin. The EPA's maximum contaminant level is just 10 ppm nitrate (as N) and 1 ppm nitrite, and levels above that are a real health risk for infants under 6 months (methemoglobinemia, also called blue baby syndrome) and during pregnancy. Because nitrate is colorless, odorless, and tasteless, the only way to know it's in your well is a certified lab test. Built on a 13" x 54" Vortech mineral tank loaded with 2.5 cubic feet of WQA Gold Seal certified nitrate-selective resin, paired with a 1-inch metered demand control valve that counts your gallons and regenerates with ordinary water softener salt only when the resin actually needs it. Rated for 10 GPM whole-house service flow. See all options in our nitrate filter collection. What's in the System 2.5 cubic feet of ResinTech SIR-100-HP - nitrate-selective strong base anion resin, chloride form, WQA Gold Seal certified for potable water. 13" x 54" Vortech mineral tank - corrosion resistant with a gravel-free underbed for clean, even flow distribution. 1-inch metered demand control valve - regenerates by actual gallons used, not a timer, with bypass included. Round brine tank, 18" diameter x 40" tall - holds the water softener salt used for regeneration. Free shipping to all lower 48 states. Why Nitrate-Selective Resin Matters Many "nitrate filters" sold online use generic type 1 or type 2 anion exchange resin, or even repurposed water softener setups. Those resins prefer sulfate over nitrate, and that creates a dangerous failure mode: once the resin loads up with sulfate, it can dump previously captured nitrate back into your water at concentrations higher than what's coming out of the well. SIR-100-HP is engineered with a different functional group that prefers nitrate: there is no nitrate dumping, even past the sulfate break. It also removes perchlorate, and the resin itself carries the WQA Gold Seal for potable water use. Whole-House vs Under-Sink RO: The Honest Answer A reverse osmosis system removes nitrate at a single tap and is a legitimate, lower-cost option when levels are moderate and you only need protected drinking water. A whole-house system treats every tap: cooking water, the bathroom sink where the baby's bottle gets rinsed, the ice maker, all of it. For wells testing over 10 ppm, with an infant or a pregnancy in the house, the gold standard is both: whole-house ion exchange plus RO polishing at the kitchen tap. We'll tell you honestly which your numbers call for - read our best nitrate filter guide for the full comparison. Runs Like a Water Softener The system meters your water use and regenerates the resin with a sodium chloride brine, exactly like a water softener. Your only routine job is keeping water softener salt in the brine tank: typically $100-200 per year for a family home. There are no cartridges and no single-use media. When the resin eventually wears out after years of service, it rebeds with replacement SIR-100-HP resin rather than replacing the whole system. Full operating-cost breakdown in our nitrate filter cost and maintenance guide. Recommended Installation Order For well water, the nitrate system goes at the end of the treatment train: sediment pre-filter → iron filter (if needed) → acid neutralizer (if pH is low) → water softener (if hard) → nitrate system → house. Hardness in particular must be removed upstream, both to protect the resin and because the brine makeup water should be softened or low-hardness to avoid calcium carbonate scaling. Test First, Buy Right Start with a well water test kit (certified lab, covers nitrate, nitrite, sulfate, hardness, and 49 other parameters) or send us the lab report you already have. Sulfate matters: high sulfate reduces the working capacity of any nitrate resin, so sizing on high-sulfate wells should be confirmed by phone.
