Overview The Milgauss in 116400GV is Rolex's anti-magnetic tool watch, distinguished from anything else in the catalogue by a green sapphire crystal, glace verte, the only coloured crystal Rolex has ever put into production. Launched in 2014 and discontinued in 2023 with no replacement, it now carries the scarcity of a closed reference rather than an active one, and the black dial variant here is the quieter of the two colourways Rolex offered, alongside the more collector-chased Z-Blue. The case is 40mm in 904L Oystersteel, water resistant to 100m, with a smooth, fully polished fixed bezel rather than the fluted or ceramic bezels found elsewhere in the range, and no crown guards, a deliberate departure from the standard Rolex sports profile. The black dial carries orange-glowing markers at 3, 6 and 9, applied stick indices in Chromalight lume, and the signature orange lightning bolt seconds hand tracing the original 1950s Milgauss design, with no date window to break the symmetry. The Oyster bracelet uses solid end links with a folding Oysterclasp and 5mm Easylink extension. Underneath the dial sits a soft-iron Faraday cage, a two-part magnetic shield giving the watch its defining 1,000-gauss resistance, the reason the case runs thicker than a comparable Oyster Perpetual. Calibre 3131 powers it, automatic and time-only, built specifically for the Milgauss and shared only with the Air-King of the same era, running on a blue Parachrom hairspring in niobium-zirconium with an antimagnetic escape wheel and pallet fork. Superlative Chronometer certified to -2/+2 seconds a day, with a 48-hour power reserve. As a discontinued reference with no direct successor, the 116400GV has become increasingly collectible toward the end of its production run, with buyers favouring later, younger examples as the closed supply ages.
