One of our favourite ornamental alliums, Allium cristophii, also known as Star of Persia, produces spectacular spherical flower heads made up of dozens of metallic lilac-purple, star-shaped flowers. The huge blooms can reach around 20cm across, creating beautiful structure amongst grasses and perennials. It’s particularly at home in sunny, well-drained borders and gravel gardens, where it copes well with dry conditions once established. The flowers are excellent for pollinators, while the architectural seed heads can be left standing long after flowering or cut and dried for displays. Allium cristophii holds the RHS Recommended: Award of Garden Merit and is included in the RHS Plants for Pollinators scheme.
