The weather in Mộc Châu and many of the northern highland areas have been unpredictable over the last few years, making it challenging for the producer to make a quality batch he's happy with. The last harvest we carried was Autumn 2024, so you can bet this year's bounty is a particularly anticipated one for everyone! The Champagne Oolong is a highly oxidized tea with an aromatic sweetness that lingers long after. It's made in the style similar to a Taiwanese oolong tea often carrying the same name, and is well loved for the signature aroma of rose and Muscat grape. A limited batch made possible each summer by tea leafhoppers—the tiny insects responsible for the tea’s signature aroma— and the producer's skill to unlock the aromatic compounds in the leaf so we can enjoy it through every sip In our tea cups, we pick up hints of lychee, figs, and ripe stonefruit- all flavors of summer we love. What is a bug-bitten tea? Bug-bitten teas carry a distinct flavor and aroma that is partly attributed to the tea leafhopper, aka the Jacobiasca formosana that particularly thrive during the warmer months. After the leafhopper bites the tea plant, the leaves produce a hormone as a defense mechanism. During the oxidation process in production, the high levels of these hormone in the tea leaves transform to deep floral and fruity characteristics that we can immediately pick up in our cups.
