Red Rose Discus
The red rose discus (Symphysodon sp.) belongs to the solid-colour side of discus breeding, where the aim is an even wash of red-orange across the whole fish rather than any bars, spots or striping. Depth of colour varies between individuals and tends to build as the fish matures and is fed well. Discus are laterally flattened cichlids from the warm, unhurried backwaters of the Amazon basin, and everything about keeping them traces back to that. Aquarium care Tall aquarium with room to turn; height matters more than length. Warm water toward the top of the tropical range, held without swings. Frequent partial water changes and modest stocking. Keep five or more so no single fish is singled out. Discus granules, frozen bloodworm and beefheart preparations, offered without rush. Red tones are held best on a varied, well-conditioned diet rather than one staple. A reasonable pick for someone who wants a warm solid colour and already keeps to a water change schedule. Cardinal tetras, rummy nose tetras and sterbai corydoras are sensible companions; anything that feeds fast or nips fins will make life difficult for them. Stock rotates with each shipment, and livestock is sold for local pickup at our Lethbridge store. See what has arrived in the discus collection.
