Galanthus ‘Walker Canada’

A snowdrop with a name almost as mysterious as its origins. Found in the garden of the late Richard Nutt at Great Barfield after his death in 2002, beside a faded and barely legible label reading simply “Walker Canada”. And that, frustratingly, is about all we know of its history. Avon Bulbs likewise describes its origin as a mystery. What we do know is considerably more exciting: this is a superb, substantial Galanthus plicatus with large flowers of exceptional substance, held above the characteristic folded foliage. The inner segments carry a striking, almost continuous dark green X-shaped mark, while the initially short scape lengthens as the season progresses. A beautifully proportioned snowdrop, and one of the more memorable survivors of the Richard Nutt collection.
