Our gangaur dolls are made by two of the last remaining craftsmen, The master craftsmen is 77 years old! Because of this, and the high demand for these artists, production is limited. Some rajput families use traditional wooden dolls during the gangaur festival in Rajasthan, and these are painted afresh every year by reputed painters called matherans. However, this craft is losing ground to cheap imitations and bad workmanship. Gangaur is a Rajasthani festival in honour of the goddess Gauri, the wife of Lord Shiva, and is a celebration of spring, harvest, and childbearing. The word 'gangaur' itself is a combination of 'Gana' (a reference to Lord Shiva) and 'Gauri', and symbolizes saubhagya, or marital bliss. During gangaur, unmarried women pray to Gauri for a good husband, while married women do so for the welfare of their husbands and for a happy married life.
