After neighborhood games, while the other boys chose ice cream, Traynor reportedly asked for a slice of pie. They started calling him “Pie Face.” Eventually, only Pie remained. The name followed him to Pittsburgh, where he spent seventeen seasons with the Pirates, hit .320 for his career, became team captain and helped lead the club to two World Series, including the 1925 championship. He was widely regarded as the premier third baseman of his era. His career unfolded through the 1920s & early '30s, alongside the strange, rubbery elastic world of theatrical cartoon shorts. PIE! pays homage to that visual language and to a childhood nickname that became inseparable from baseball history. Available for one week only.
