Charley Toorop - Vase with Flowers against a Wall
Flowers burst out of the vase in a wild dance of colour and form. Charley Toorop did not paint what she saw, but what she felt. For her, art was a means of expressing the inexpressible – and in this floral still life, you can see her expressive, almost raw approach at its best. Toorop (1891-1955) was a remarkable figure in the Dutch art world. The daughter of the famous Jan Toorop, she nevertheless developed a voice entirely her own. Throughout her life, she worked in an expressive-realistic style, inspired by German Expressionism and Picasso's post-Cubist work. Her “hard” modelling and coarse paint treatment made her unique. This work from the Museum MORE collection shows why Toorop belongs to the absolute top of Dutch realism. In an exclusive collaboration, we bring her powerful vision to these limited edition socks.
