Owned by Bill DeWitt and a Cincinnati ownership group, the Stingers built a competitive roster across four WHA seasons, most notably signing 18-year-old Mark Messier for 1978–79 alongside Mike Gartner and Mike Liut — players too young at the time to play in the top tier of professional hockey. When the WHA folded in 1979, the Stingers were not among the four clubs absorbed into the top tier of professional hockey. Ownership shifted the team into the Central Hockey League for a final 1979–80 season before the franchise folded for good, capping a five-year run that gave Cincinnati its first major-league hockey and a run of future top-tier stars.Vintage-inspired reproduction — not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by any team, league, or organization.
