Passiflora miniata 4" pot
Scarlet Passion Flower. Large, bright red flowers are followed by orange/yellow striped fruit that is wonderful to eat and also very pretty. Most suitable for warm climates. A short day bloomer, Passiflora miniata will bloom fall through spring and quit once the days get longer. Subgenus: Passiflora, Supersection: Coccinea. This plant used to be known as Passiflora coccinea, but has recently found to be a separate species from the true P. coccinea and has been described and published by John Vanderplank under the new name P. miniata. Flower photo courtesy of Jorge Ochoa. Light: Full sun. Water: Moderate. Soil: A wide range of soil, but it must be well-drained. Fertilizer: A slow-release, bloom-booster type fertilizer is appreciated, but beware of using a fertilizer with too much nitrogen as it may push leaves at the expense of flowers. Hardiness: Zone 10.
