There is permission to stare at others out of restaurant windows, into cars gliding in opposite directions, or at passengers on escalators floating by as they move into diagonal distance—those are the rules. These accepted social abandonments are welcomed by the low risk of an actual encounter. We’ll take them. All of these scrims, screens, and shields that embolden us. It’s always been like that. Even the dark, with all its allowances impossible in the crude light of day. Or a song that casts a texture over us until we feel like saying or writing this or that, infused with a little perfume of its passing by. Why not embroider on a screen to reveal it? Who gave you permission? Silk, a window, a brush, a screen, a keyboard. The Escalator Skirt both conceals and reveals. It takes on the character of what’s beneath it while keeping its own form. Made of our transparent, custom-embroidered Italian chambray shantung satin, it is finely pleated and trimmed at the waist and hem with olive Japanese checkered velvet. A decorative English posy and the weight of the velvet balance the fabric’s slight iridescence, its palette pulled from the colors of ukiyo-e prints and Marchesi pastries.
