Fire, smoke and chance shape the extraordinary surface of this one-of-a-kind orb vessel by ceramic artist Bob Smith. This rare technique involves multiple firings. While the pottery is still glowing hot, ferric chloride is applied to develop its distinctive warm tones. The piece is then placed in a straw-filled chamber, where smoke penetrates the crackled glaze and creates spontaneous dark markings and impressions. Practiced by very few potters, this specialized process ensures that every finished surface is distinctly one of a kind.
