Pair of ‘El Rancho’ Lounge Chairs by Maija Ruoslahti, Finland, 1970s

Brand: Roomage
SKU: SE453

Rare pair of ‘El Rancho’ lounge chairs designed by Finnish interior architect Maija Ruoslahti and manufactured by Kalustekiila in 1971. Presented in their original black leather, this matching pair is an uncommon version of the distinctive Finnish design. The chairs combine chunky dark-stained birch elements with chrome-plated steel and generously padded black leather upholstery. The exposed construction is an essential part of the design: wide leather straps support the sides and back, while leather cord threaded through metal eyelets creates graphic detailing across the cushions. Small castors complete the low, substantial form. With their exceptionally generous proportions, the El Rancho chairs have a substantial, almost oversized presence. The contrast between dark-stained birch, polished metal and black leather gives the pair a strong and graphic 1970s character. Despite their scale, the exposed frame and open construction keep the design visually balanced. El Rancho was designed by Maija Ruoslahti in 1971 and produced by Finnish manufacturer Kalustekiila. Ruoslahti’s archival material documents the El Rancho furniture group as a 1971 design made by Kalustekiila for Polar Design Oy’s export collection. The chairs remain in good original vintage condition with authentic patina throughout. The original black leather shows creasing, scratches and surface wear consistent with age and use. The dark-stained birch elements have some marks and wear to the finish, and the chrome-plated steel shows minor age-related wear. Structurally solid and fully functional.
