Recorded in Jamaica at the legendary Music Works Studio, the album brought together two major forces in roots reggae: the uncompromising sound-system vision of Jah Shaka and the unmistakable voice and songwriting of Jamaican roots veteran Max Romeo. “Rich People” is a heavyweight roots selection carrying the conscious message, deep bass and spiritual intensity that define the Shaka sound. Romeo’s commanding vocal sits over a powerful roots rhythm, creating the kind of record built for the serious sound-system session — music with a message, weight and purpose. Romeo’s meeting and recording partnership with Jah Shaka brought together two artists from different sides of the reggae world: a legendary Jamaican vocalist with decades of history and a London sound-system pioneer who had dedicated his life to keeping the roots flame burning. Their collaboration resulted in Fari Captain of My Ship and Our Rights, both released in 1992. “Rich People” is a prime example of that meeting of cultures and generations — Jamaican roots consciousness meeting the heavyweight UK sound-system tradition. Originally released as part of Fari Captain of My Ship, the track now receives its second official reissue from the album, following the continuing vinyl campaign to make these essential Jah Shaka recordings available once again.
