Hosta 'Backyard Monster' | Giant Green Leaves with Creamy White Margins

A gentle giant with creamy white edges Hosta 'Backyard Monster' brings enormous green leaves and creamy white margins to a roomy shade garden. Slight ripples soften the edges, while shallow cups and gentle puckering give each leaf quiet character. J. Schwarz registered this seedling of unknown parentage in 2007. Near-white flowers add a softer note beside the bold foliage. Give it space among smaller shade plants, where its giant leaves can take centre stage. Leaves with presence: Broad, heart-based leaves reach 45.7 × 40.6 cm (18 × 16 in), creating a generous canopy of medium green. A creamy outline: Creamy white margins trace each leaf with a slightly rippled edge, bringing clear contrast to a shaded planting. Subtle texture: Light cupping, gentle waves and shallow corrugation add depth without competing with the striking leaf pattern. A softer finishing touch: Near-white tubular flowers complement the foliage on scapes reaching 91.4–101.6 cm (36–40 in). Feature Specification Size (H × W) 91.4 × 106.7 cm (36 × 42 in) Hardiness Zone 3–9 Colour Medium green leaves with creamy white margins; near-white flowers Light Requirements Partial to full shade Grower's Tip: Give this giant a generous planting space and evenly moist, well-drained soil rather than squeezing it between established neighbours. Its moderate growth rate rewards patience, and its Zone 3–9 hardiness suits Canadian winters. Our True to Type standard means you receive the authentic Backyard Monster cultivar.
