Antique Signed Japanese Suzuri Bako, Calligraphy Box - Cypress | Meiji, 1900

An antique Japanese Suzuri Bako, merchant's calligraphy box for the storage of ink and brushes. Made from hinoki (cypress) wood, with copper hardware. This piece features a dated base, showing Meiji period, 1900. This compact box features an array of drawers, as well as a lidded compartment on top, separated by smaller sections beneath it. The underside of the box's lid shows its life as a calligraphy box, with ink stains covering it.
