Recommended Applications Grinding, sanding, sawing, sweeping, and bagging Environments with non-oil based particulate hazards Reduction of exposure to airborne biological particles such as mold and bacteria Hot or humid work environments where heat buildup is a concern Clinical, industrial, and construction settings Frequently Asked Questions What does NIOSH approved N95 mean? NIOSH (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health) N95 approval means the respirator has been tested and certified to filter at least 95% of airborne non-oil based particles when properly fitted. The "N" designates it is not resistant to oil-based particles. The 8511 meets this standard and carries the NIOSH TC approval number on the packaging. What is the Cool Flow exhalation valve and why does it matter? The Cool Flow valve is a one-way valve on the front of the mask that opens when you exhale, allowing warm, humid air to escape quickly — and closes when you inhale so incoming air still passes through the N95 filter media. The result is a cooler, less humid interior during extended wear. Note: because exhaled air is not filtered through the mask material, the Cool Flow valve is not appropriate in environments where the wearer needs to protect others from their own respiratory output (e.g. sterile surgical fields). For standard particulate protection of the wearer, it is a significant comfort advantage. Is the 8511 appropriate for healthcare or clinical use? The 8511 is NIOSH approved as a particulate respirator but is not FDA cleared as a surgical mask. It is appropriate for reducing exposure to airborne particulates and biological particles such as mold and bacteria in clinical environments. For surgical procedures requiring a surgical N95, refer to the 3M 1860 or equivalent FDA-cleared surgical N95 respirator. Call us at 866-218-0902 if you need help selecting the right respirator for your specific application. Is this a reusable or disposable respirator? The 3M 8511 is a disposable single-use respirator. It should be discarded when it becomes damaged, soiled, or difficult to breathe through. Do not attempt to clean, decontaminate, or reuse. What is Solventum and is this still a 3M product? In 2024, 3M spun off its Health Care business into a new independent company called Solventum. The 8511 respirator is the same trusted product — same design, same manufacturing standards, same NIOSH certification — now sold under the Solventum brand. If you have ordered 3M 8511 in the past, Solventum 8511 is the same item. Does a prescription or professional license apply to this product? Yes — this product is labeled "Rx only" by the manufacturer. A valid prescription or professional/business license is required before shipment.
