Flatwoods Savanna WMA — Overview This is Louisiana's 52nd WMA and one of the newest in the state. It was established in partnership with Trust for Public Land and consists of 426 acres in southwest Allen Parish, located between the towns of Reeves and LeBlanc, and only opened to the public on July 1, 2025. The WMA contains old-growth longleaf pine savanna and sections being restored for longleaf pine reforestation. It is the only known site of mature longleaf pine in Southwest Louisiana and the only known site in the state with both mature longleaf pine flatwoods and natural, unmodified flatwood ponds. It's a genuinely unique and ecologically significant piece of ground, but that conservation focus shapes what hunting is and isn't available here. Hunting Opportunities — Very Limited Hunting and trapping: Archery only deer hunting is available as well as small game. Here's the honest reality: this WMA is primarily a conservation and non-consumptive recreation area. Primary activities listed by LDWF are hiking, fishing, photography, birding, education, and nature exploration. Hunting is limited to archery-only deer and small game. For the 2025-26 season, the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission approved a Declaration of Emergency establishing seasons for the WMA, and it falls within Louisiana Deer Area 3. There is no modern gun deer season, no turkey season, and no waterfowl hunting available. At only 426 acres total, the huntable ground is quite small even within those limited opportunities. Bottom Line Flatwoods Savanna is more of a conservation showpiece than a hunting destination. If you're heading to southwest Louisiana specifically to hunt, you'd be much better served looking at the larger WMAs in that part of the state — areas like Thistlethwaite, Sabine, or Indian Bayou WMAs offer far more hunting acreage and species variety. Flatwoods Savanna is a cool place to explore and arrow a deer from a stand, but it's not worth a long drive from Oklahoma as a dedicated hunting trip.
