Model: Credor “Brushed Gold” GBBE998 / 6898-0010 Year: January 1998 Features: The Theme. The GBBE998 is golden just about everywhere it can be. The hands, indices, case and even the movement itself - yet it never feels garish. I think we have the dial to thank for that. Had Credor leaned into a yellow gold dial rather than the softer champagne finish, I suspect the results would have felt too on the nose. The Texture. Gold dominates the visual identity of the watch, but the textures deserve just as much attention. The subtle brushing seen on the dial works its way round to the caseback - an unconventional decision given 68 casebacks are typically high-polished. Combined with the decorated movement, the continuation of textures makes the entire watch feel delightfully cohesive. The Case. The coin edge bezel is another part of the design that I can semi-confidently describe as being unique to this Credor (and its platinum cousin - the GBBE999). And much like the brushing that’s seen throughout the watch, Credor chose to extend the coin edge motif from the bezel to the crown. The Style. All things considered, it’s one of the cleanest dress watches I’ve seen in recent memory. Obviously any watch powered by Credor’s impossibly thin, 1.98mm movement is destined to feel elegant, but the stripped-back look of the GBBE998 ensures it will remain a timeless classic. The Movement. At just 1.98mm thick, the 68 movement is the thinnest mechanical calibre ever produced by Seiko. Each one takes two highly skilled Credor watchmakers half a day to assemble.
