Sarpa Dosha is said to appear in various ways, such as childlessness, absence of progeny (Santana), or children facing health and life challenges, among other difficulties. This condition is also known as Sarpa Dosh or Naag Dosh in astrological tradition. In connection with this belief, practices like Naga Panchami and Naga Puja are observed. In regions such as Dakshina Kannada in Karnataka, sacred serpent groves called Naga Bana have long been preserved, while similar traditions like Sarpa Kavu exist in Kerala. Naga Puja, including Abhishekam rituals, is performed to seek the blessings and goodwill of Naga Devatas. Individuals who believe they are affected by Sarpa Dosha, or those experiencing delays in marriage or childbirth, often perform these rituals. Unmarried women may pray for a suitable life partner, while married women may perform worship seeking fertility and progeny, as serpents are traditionally regarded as symbols of fertility. Importance of Naga Devatas Serpent worship is considered to have roots in the Vedic period, with references found in texts like the Yajurveda and Vedic Samhitas. Naga Devatas are widely revered in Hindu traditions and are associated with major deities—Lord Shiva is often depicted with serpents, Lord Vishnu rests on the multi-hooded serpent Vasuki, and Lord Ganesha is sometimes shown with a cobra. The Bhagavata Purana also describes symbolic roles of serpents, including associations with cosmic order, time cycles, and natural forces.
