Containers Apply 2–3 tablespoons per gallon of soil, mixing into the top 2 inches of soil. To maintain existing containers, water thoroughly and allow the water to absorb before feeding for best results. Preparing New Garden Beds and Plantings Mix 1 pound (3 cups) of fertilizer per 5 square feet of garden area. Apply in early spring or late fall. Work into the soil to a depth of 3 inches and water thoroughly before planting. Top-Dressing Established Garden Beds Use 2 pounds (6 cups) of fertilizer per 10 square feet of garden after the last freeze. Work into the soil to a depth of 3 inches and water thoroughly.
