The Rolex Daytona needs little introduction—but the “Panna” dial certainly does. The “Panna” dial is a rare and highly sought-after variation of the steel reference 116520, produced in the early 2000s. Its name comes from the Italian word for “cream,” a nod to its distinctive off-white, ivory-toned appearance. Originally manufactured as a crisp white dial, a subtle chemical imperfection in the varnish caused certain examples to age into this warm, creamy hue over time. These dials are typically found in watches produced between 2000 and 2003. Unlike the well-known “tropical” dials of vintage Rolex models—which turn brown—the Panna dial evolves differently, developing a softer, more uniform cream coloration. Today, Panna dials are considered “modern collectibles,” representing one of the last documented instances of a Rolex dial naturally changing color due to a production anomaly. Offered here is a K-series example dating to 2001, from that tightly defined production window. The watch is in excellent condition, featuring a strong, well-preserved case with sharp lugs and an unpolished tachymeter bezel. The cream-toned dial has aged beautifully and remains in outstanding condition. This iconic chronograph is fitted with an Oyster bracelet, reference 78490, with solid end links and a clasp stamped “PJ8.” It has been fully serviced by our watchmaker and is ready to be enjoyed.
