The Physic Botanicals
This collection is directly based on series of special 1700s antique engravings from a 18th century 'herbal', of medicinal plants (drawn 300 years ago in London's oldest botanical gardens, the Chelsea Physic Garden). The term physic was used to describe the practice of medicine, with ‘physic gardens’ being spaces dedicated to growing plants with healing properties. Our collection contains a mixture of delicate ferns, fragrant blooms and wild herbs chosen for their calming colours and interesting forms. The original illustrations were drawn by a pioneering skilled female artist Elizabeth Blackwell, notable for solely documenting and engraving this large work of botanicals in the hope of freeing her husband from debtors' prison. Framing Each print is hand-framed in earthy linen mounts with dark blue accent borders and finished with textured deep blue mouldings. Available up to a full set of eight, a curated set of six, a curated set of four and singles. To order a pair for £280, add the code TWOBOTANICALS at the checkout.
