De Cust van Engeland, tusschen Welles en ’t Eylandt Cogge [The coast of England between Wells-next-the-Sea and Coquet Island] Fine Dutch sea chart of the north-east coast of England, extending from Wells-next-the-Sea and the Wash northwards to Coquet Island, published in Amsterdam by Iacob Theunisz of the Lootsman family. The chart is drawn for practical navigation rather than inland topography: the coast is strongly engraved, hazards and shallows are emphasised, and the open North Sea is filled with a dense web of rhumb lines radiating from compass roses. A sailing ship and ornate cartouche give the sheet strong decorative appeal, while the old Dutch nomenclature captures the commercial importance of English east-coast waters to seventeenth-century Amsterdam pilots. A scarce and attractive Lootsman sea chart, particularly appealing for collectors of Norfolk, Lincolnshire, Yorkshire, Northumberland, early maritime cartography and the history of North Sea trade routes.
