Classic Aikido Jo - 4.21 Shaku - Striped White Oak Made in Japan (Kyushu region) Available woods: White Oak (Striped) Lenght: 4.21 Shaku (127.6 cm) | Diameter: 24 mm, 27 mm. Finish : Standard Finish or Seido Special Finish This classic Aikido Jo is available in Shirakashi Kuroiri (Striped White Oak). The length is a standard 4.21 shaku (127.6 cm), with 2 different diameters to choose from. Shirakashi Kuroiri (meaning "black-infused White Oak") shares every physical property of standard White Oak, set apart only by its unique dark grain patterns. While this pieces were usually discarded due to their aesthetics, they are equal to the standard white oak and will sustain violent contacts during practice, In an effort to promote a sustainable approach as high-quality timber depletes in Japan, we decided (under the impulse of Master Aramaki) to offer them for practitioners seeking a white Jo with unique character. The standard thickness is 24 mm (8 bu) and the 27 model is designed to work tanren (reinforcement), which is very important in some Aikido schools. The 27 mm model is very strong, which also makes it a great Jo to practice with very violent contacts. All the classic Jo are adapted to the practice of Aikido but also Jodo, Jojutsu and other Koryu. Choice of wood species: Striped White Oak Diameter: 24~25 mm (8bu) or 27 mm (9bu). Available finish: Standard Finish or Seido Special Finish Manufacturing workshop: Aramaki Finish options: In 2021, with concerns for the workers, all workshops greatly reduced the number of urethane varnished weapons and replaced the finish by a "Candle Wax". Seido is now transitioning to a new finish offer for the majority of its weapons. Standard Finish: At Seido, we complete the workshop finish with Camelia oil treatment by default. This is the standard Seido finish. We do not apply any additional polishing for this finish, so some weapons might have a slightly rough surface. For maintenance, we recommend that you oil your weapons about once a month with a vegetal based oil. Seido Special Finish: For this special Finish, we first apply a Camelia oil polish (oiling and sanding the weapons with oiled sand paper), then we finish the weapon with high quality bee wax. This finish makes the wood as smooth as it can be and guarantee an excellent protection for several months. For maintenance, we recommend at least to oil your weapons every month or so. You can also apply wax a few hours after oiling your weapons (if some oil remains on the wood, remove it with a piece of cloth or tissue). Classic Jo - Weights Wood Shirakashi (Kuroiri) (Striped White Oak) 8 bu = 24 mm 500 ~ 600 g 9 bu = 27 mm 600 ~ 700 g *Weapons are all handmade and therefore, color and weight can vary slightly
