Because native Butternuts are endangered by canker disease, Buartnuts are highly prized for their canker resistance and delicious, buttery flavor. Ideal Growing Zones & Conditions Hardiness Zones: USDA Zones 3–7. Some cultivars can survive down to -40°F, making them exceptionally cold-hardy. Sunlight: Requires full sun for optimal nut production and growth. Soil: Prefers deep, moist, rich, well-drained soil. They naturally do well in bottomlands. Growth & Yield: Fast-growing (up to 6 feet in a single year when young). Mature trees reach 40–60 feet tall and produce nuts within 6 to 10 years.
