Purplish, oat-like spikelets uniformly line one side of the stem and fade to a tan color in the fall. The basal foliage often turns shades of purple and red in fall. It is highly resistant to browsing by deer. As well as providing year-round cover for wildlife, side-oats grama is a larval host plant to the green skipper butterfly and the dotted skipper butterfly making it a great choice for a pollinator garden. It is good for wildflower meadows, prairie restorations, and garden accents.
