This intimate monotype demonstrates Van Hoeydonck's fascination with experimentation and the expressive possibilities of printmaking. Rich black ink interacts with the unpredictable textures of the monotype process, creating an image that is simultaneously spontaneous and highly refined. The work reflects the artist's willingness to embrace chance as an active element within the creative process. Rather than controlling every detail, Van Hoeydonck allows the material itself to contribute to the final composition, resulting in a work of exceptional vitality. Van Hoeydonck (1925–2025) joined the Formes group in 1956 and co-founded G58 in Antwerp two years later, marking his shift from figuration into geometric abstraction. He is internationally best known for 'Fallen Astronaut', the aluminium sculpture placed on the Moon by the crew of Apollo 15 in 1971 in tribute to astronauts and cosmonauts who died in the exploration of space.
