[A1175] Strophocactus wittii (Amazon Moonflower)
Strophocactus wittii (Syn. Selenicereus wittii) is a rare jungle cactus that grows in the periodically flooded riverbanks of the Amazon River basin. The flattened stems cling to and wrap around the trunks of trees as it grows epiphytically to reach light above the canopies. Flowers are large and white and only bloom for a single night before wilting. In habitat blooms usually occur in May. It has been found to bloom between November and February in European greenhouse cultivation. Seed dispersal is occurs during the flooding season, during which its unique air-filled seeds are spread through the water—a unique strategy among cacti.
